Premature Ejaculation (PE)
How Normal Ejaculation Works
Ejaculation begins with an erection and an erection begins with sensory and mental stimulation. Impulses from the brain and local nerves cause the muscles of the penis to relax, allowing blood to flow in and fill the open spaces. The blood creates pressure making the penis expand. Blood is trapped sustaining erection.
Ejaculation usually occurs when friction on the penis send signals to the brain and spinal cord, which stimulates muscle contractions. These contractions force semen into the urethra where muscles around the urethra propel the semen through and out of the penis.
What is Premature Ejaculation?
According to the International Society for Sexual Medicine premature ejaculation is characterized by:
Ejaculation that always or nearly always occurs within one minute or less of vaginal penetration.
The inability to delay ejaculation on all or nearly all vaginal penetrations
Most therapists and physicians describe premature ejaculation as when a man cannot control how quickly ejaculation happens and this interferes with the ability to have satisfactory sexual experiences.
Hypersensitivity to penile stimulation is the physical reason. But this reaction is produced by a combination of both psychological and biological factors.
Most men experience premature ejaculation at least once in their lives. Adolescents and young men most often experience it during their first sexual encounters, but eventually learn ejaculatory control.
